When Scattering the Ashes is Your Choice

Assisting Families in the Tulsa, OK Community
A Legacy cremation consultant can help you scatter cremation remains (cremains) in a natural open place: over the waters of an ocean or lake, drifting through the air in the mountains during a beautiful moonlight service, or throughout a garden where the spirit of the deceased can roam free.
This decision is irreversible and is not to be taken lightly. One of the beautiful things about the cremation process is that the decision does not have to be made immediately. Scattering the cremains may be done at any future date, when you are sure you are ready.
The most important decision is “where to scatter”. Over the years, Legacy cremation counselors have learned that it is best to keep in mind that the location should be personal. It should have some meaning for your loved one. It may be a favorite place where family often went; it may be a place your loved one like to go to be alone and think. Perhaps it’s the spot where a marriage proposal took place, or where a first house was built. Whatever the choice, you can have a gathering of close family and friends at the spot before scattering the ashes, when all can share stories and memories about the deceased.
The state of the ashes upon scattering. The remains must be completely pulverized, including the bones. No bone fragments should be evident. Since the presence of bone fragments may indicate a crime scene, Legacy cremation staff is extremely diligent at making sure this takes place.
Legalities of location. The Legacy cremation professional you work with will learn about the legal details regarding the scattering of ashes in the specific place you have picked. Legalities vary from region to region, and you may need to get permission. Legacy will look into it and let you know if this is necessary. Generally, the only time when permission is not necessary, is when you choose to scatter on your own private property.
- If you want to scatter on someone else’s private property, you only need their permission.
- If you want to scatter at a national park, each one has its own rules. A clear understanding of the park’s rules and regulations will have to be obtained. Most allow it within certain limits. For example, you may have to scatter within a certain distance from monuments, and there may be certain places that are off limits.
- Many churches have special cremation memorial gardens where the ashes of the deceased can be scattered. If your loved one had a special church they liked to attend, you might want to inquire there. If there is no memorial garden, you could consider scattering the ashes around the base of a favorite tree, in a flower garden, or along a pathway.
One of the most popular choices is a scattering at sea. This is especially relevant if your loved one felt close to the water. But here again, there are guidelines to follow. Each state has its own rules about how far out you need for be from shore. But what is more beautiful than scattering ashes at sunrise or sunset?
There are two types of scatterings at sea, when you are working with Legacy:
- Unattended: A Legacy cremation staff member will respectfully conduct a sea scattering service, and your attendance is not required. Following the scattering, we will place flowers on the water to mark the spot. We record the exact longitude and latitude coordinates which are provided to you in the form of a certificate suitable for framing. The family does not attend this placement.
- Attended: Legacy can provide for a private charter of the vessel to take up to 6 attendees out for the scattering service. You are put directly in contact with the charter service to coordinate dates, times and directions. We do not accompany you on this trip.
Biodegradable urns. Using a biodegradable cremation urn made specifically for ocean placement reduces the potential for problems with the wind and waves and may make for a much more pleasant experience. We have some options available which can be viewed online through our urn catalog. Some families, of course, prefer to pour the ashes directly into the water.
The “green” case for scattering ashes:
- No embalming is required, so no chemicals are added to the ground or water supply, helping to preserve the earth for future generations.
- Even if you decide to bury in a biodegradable urn, it takes up very little space, unlike the burying of a casket. The cremation option is always the eco-friendly option.
Purchasing a cremation package is perfect for all races, creeds, religions and ethnic groups. The United States of America has a rich history that honors people of all cultures and backgrounds. Choosing cremation does not eliminate any of the family’s requirements. Legacy cremation professionals have decades of experience satisfying the specific requests of all cultural traditions. We will help you create a cremation package that respects your particular wishes and we will carry out each detail with complete care.
